Q: I have a CDL with a Hazardous Material Endorsement (HME) and currently cannot complete the recertification process because of the closure of PennDOT Driver License Centers. What do I do?

A: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has granted a temporary extension from requirements regarding the expiration of TSA security threat assessments for HME holders (see the attached documents below).  Considering the exemption, the expiration date of an HME for a Pennsylvania CDL holder who held a valid, unexpired HME with a determination of no security threat on or after March 6, 2020 is extended until May 31, 2020.

Q: Will my HME remain valid with the extension of the expiration date of my CDL?

A: Yes, when your CDL expiration date is extended, your HME is also extended for the same time period.
